Safe Guarding

Creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for everyone involved in Taekwondo across the UK.

In a safeguarding emergency, immediate action is essential to protect those at risk. If there is immediate danger, contact the emergency services by calling 999. Safeguarding concerns should be reported to the appropriate local authority safeguarding services in the relevant UK home nation. Advice and support can also be sought from Childline.

Childline

For non-emergency safeguarding concerns, you can contact the Taekwondo Council UK Safeguarding Team for advice and support.

Taekwondo Council UK is committed to providing a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for everyone involved in Taekwondo across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Safeguarding is central to our values, and we take our responsibility to protect children and adults at risk seriously.

We promote strong safeguarding practice through clear policies, effective reporting processes, and ongoing awareness. By fostering a culture of respect and accountability, Taekwondo Council UK works to ensure the wellbeing of all participants and maintain the highest standards of safety across our sport.

Safeguarding Team

If any member or participant within the Taekwondo Council UK community has a safeguarding concern, it is important to raise it as soon as possible. TCUK has a dedicated and approachable safeguarding team who are available to listen, provide advice, and take appropriate action where needed.

The safeguarding team acts as a key point of contact for reporting concerns and ensures that all matters are handled sensitively, confidentially, and promptly. Taekwondo Council UK is committed to creating a safe environment for everyone involved in the sport and encourages open communication and confidence in reporting concerns. By providing clear and trusted reporting routes, TCUK promotes a culture of safety, trust, and accountability across the Taekwondo community.

Safeguarding Policies

At Taekwondo Council UK, the safety and wellbeing of our members is our top priority. We are committed to maintaining a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment across the Taekwondo community.

Our safeguarding policies are available for all Taekwondo Council UK-affiliated clubs and can be viewed and downloaded using the buttons below. We strongly encourage clubs to read, understand, and embed these policies into their day-to-day practice.

To demonstrate a shared commitment to safeguarding, clubs are encouraged to link their websites to this safeguarding page. This helps promote transparency, confidence, and trust within the Taekwondo community. By working together, we can ensure a safe and positive environment for everyone involved in Taekwondo Council UK.

Safeguarding Best Practice for Clubs and Coaches

In our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and professionalism, Taekwondo Council UK strongly encourages all affiliated clubs and instructors to follow the safeguarding best practice and training guidance outlined below.

Clubs with Fewer Than 50 Students

For clubs with fewer than 50 students, there is no requirement to appoint a Club Welfare Officer (CWO). However, safeguarding must still be clearly promoted.

  • Safeguarding information should be visible on your club website
  • Any safeguarding concerns should be directed to the TCUK Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs)
  • Clubs should include a link to the TCUK safeguarding page: https://www.tkdngb.co.uk/en/members-area/safeguarding

Clubs with 50+ Students

For clubs with more than 50 students, it is strongly recommended that a Club Welfare Officer (CWO) is appointed.

Best practice includes:

  • Appointing a CWO who is familiar with the members of the club
  • Displaying the CWO's name, contact details, and photograph clearly on the club website
  • Making safeguarding policies easily accessible by either hosting the policies directly on your website (clubs may download and use TCUK policies), or providing a clear link to the TCUK safeguarding page: https://www.tkdngb.co.uk/en/members-area/safeguarding

Clubs should also explain that they have implemented Taekwondo Council UK safeguarding policies, demonstrating a clear commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment.

Safeguarding Training (Recommended)

To support strong safeguarding practice, the following training is recommended:

  • All instructors: Safeguarding & Protecting Children – Online Classroom Link
  • Junior coaches (ages 16–18): Safeguarding & Protecting Children (16–18) – Online Classroom Link
  • Refresher training: A safeguarding refresher every three years via the Safeguarding & Protecting Children Online Course Link
  • Welfare Officers and DSLs: Welfare Officer Training – Time to Listen Course Link

A range of additional safeguarding training is also available through BMABA, which all full TCUK instructors can access free of charge.

Funding Support

Funding is available to support clubs and coaches in accessing safeguarding training.
